No Pipeline Expansion in a Climate Crisis

  • Danger to our neighbors. The Burnaby Mountain tank farm is 300 metres from an elementary school. Burnaby's Fire Department has said that this project, with 14 new oil tanks, poses a risk to community safety.

  • No community consent. In 2015, the Liberals led by Justin Trudeau promised that there would be no pipeline expansion without consent of the community including first nations. The local Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh nations have made clear repeatedly they do not approve this project, and continue to fight it in court.

  • Shameful giveaways to big oil. Canada has the largest amount of fossil fuel subsidies in any G7 country proportionate to GDP. The parliamentary budget officer said the Liberals may have overpaid by as much as a billion dollars for the pipeline.

  • Increased spill risk. The expansion his pipeline expansion will mean an increase in tanker traffic from 30 every year to over 400 a year in the Burrard Inlet. The National Energy Board (NEB) has confirmed that just one spill would pose a significant risk to the endangered Southern Resident Orca population.
